Chapter 20: The Repaired Box
A knock came at the front door, three slow raps.
"Let him in," Angie said from the bedroom, in a voice that was almost a whisper.
Dixon opened the door.
Gerald Boswell stood on the landing in his black overcoat, holding a flat box wrapped in a grey cloth.
He took off his hat when he stepped inside.
"I called him at seven," Clover said, from behind the couch. "Angie told me to."
"Good," Dixon said, and stepped aside.
Gerald crossed the front room.
At the bedroom door, he stopped and looked at his daughter propped on three pillows, thin as paper under the quilt.
Her hair had been braided by Clover, and her hands lay on the blanket in the red mittens.
"Hi, Dad," she said.
"Angelica."
"Sit. Not too close. I don't know if I'll like it."
He sat on the wooden chair by the window.
He held the cloth bundle on his knees and didn't speak for a minute.
"I brought you something," he said.
He unwrapped it.
The silver music box sat in his hands, whole.
Its lid was fastened with a hairline of brighter metal, and the tiny bird on top had been straightened.
