Chapter 20: Fall
The shutter over the nearest door was two inches of steel, and I put my palm against it.
Rust bloomed across the metal.
It spread outward in blossoms, brown and flaking, and the steel began to sag.
"Mara," Fenn said sharply. "That wall is load-bearing."
"Then you should leave."
She did.
She grabbed her coat and a handheld radio and ran for the service door at the back.
Her heels clicked on the tile.
The technicians ran after her.
Forrest rolled off the table onto his feet in his hospital gown.
I steadied him by the sleeve of the coat a technician had dropped, keeping my skin off his.
He was shaking.
"Can you walk?"
"I can walk."
"Then we're going after her."
The shutter fell inward in a shower of rust and dust, and we went through.
The service ramp climbed in a long concrete curve, lit by caged bulbs.
At the top, a heavy door stood half open on white light.
Fenn was already out of it.
We came out of the ramp onto the edge of the parade field into a blinding morning.
