Chapter 4: Class
Classes were worse than the plant.
Trina walked me to the senior hall at eight, talking the whole way, and every cadet we passed went silent and flattened against the lockers.
I kept my gloved hands pressed to my sides.
Third period was history.
The teacher, a gray man with a stack of papers, told me to take the empty seat in the back row.
The desks around it were empty too.
Then the door opened and Brent Talmadge walked in with his left hand wrapped in white gauze to the elbow.
Twenty cadets stopped talking at once.
He did not take his seat.
He stood at the front and looked at the teacher.
"Sir, I request that Hargett be removed from this room. She's a danger to every student here."
The teacher cleared his throat and said nothing, which was its own answer.
Talmadge turned to face the class.
"My father is on the Armed Services Committee. She's a lab experiment. You all saw what she did. She could kill any one of us."
Someone in the second row whispered, "He's right."
I felt every eye on me, and I was so tired.
I had been small and quiet my entire life, and it had never once saved me.
I stood up.
"Brent."
He flinched at his own name.
"You tore off my glove on a bet," I said. "Everyone saw it. I told you not to get close."
