Chapter 23: Six Candles

Rosamund Crane knelt on the nursery floor in a gray prison dress, and her hands were shaking.

The six guards on her door had walked her here, and not one had stopped her from kneeling.

Her golden braids were gone.

Someone had cut her hair to her chin, and it hung straight and dull.

She didn't look up when Torren and I came along the corridor.

"I don't ask to go in," she said to the stone. "I only ask to see her, once, and say it."

"No," I said.

Her head sank lower.

"Not at a keyhole," I said. "You said what you said about her in the gallery, in front of your ladies."

"You held a knife to her in front of my guards."

"If you mean it, you'll say it in the hall, in front of the same people. And she'll answer you herself."

Rosamund lifted her face.

It was gaunt and blotched, and there was no malice in it anywhere.

"When?" she said.

"On her birthday," Torren said. "The Council will hear your judgment that day."

"It's three weeks off. You will wait."

"I'll wait," Rosamund whispered.

Posy turned six on the first warm morning of spring.

She woke before the sun and climbed on top of us in the big bed, with Biscuit riding her shoulder.
