Chapter 20: The Door

Ronan's POV

I put Iris behind me at the gate, and she stepped around me and went into the house for the twins.

I let her.

My Beta had four Redfern wolves on the porch and nineteen more asleep in the bunkhouse a half mile off.

Ansel had forty at the tree line.

The first of them came out of the dark before I could count the rest.

"Back door!" the Beta shouted.

They hit the house from three sides at once.

Glass broke in the kitchen.

I took the front hall and held the door with my shoulder.

The first two men through it were nearly as big as me.

I knocked one down.

The second caught me across the ribs with a hunting knife, and I felt it go in.

It was not deep, but it was long, and my shirt filled with heat.

I put him through the wall.

"Alpha," a voice said from the stairs. "Ronan."

Iris stood on the third step with Joey on her hip and June's hand in hers.

"Take them to the cellar," I said. "The Beta's wife is already down there."

"You're bleeding."

"It's nothing. Go."

She looked at the blood on my shirt and at the door behind me, and I saw her decide.

She put Joey's hand in June's and said, "Stay with the Beta's wife. Don't come out until I say."

"Mama," June said.

"I'll be right here."

She watched them go down the cellar steps with the Beta's wife.

Then she turned and walked to the middle of the hall, and the clothes fell off her.
