Chapter 8: The Gate

I went to the window anyway.

Twenty Blackwater wolves stood in two lines in the road outside the Redfern gate, in jackets and boots, their breath white in the cold.

Ansel stood in front of them with the twins on either side of him, each holding one of his hands.

Lorna waited by the car with her arms folded against the chill.

Behind our fence Redfern's wolves had come out of their houses, and they stood in the yard in silence, as many of them as Ansel had brought.

My fever had dropped to something I could stand on.

I pulled a sweater over my head and went down the stairs.

Ronan was at the foot of them.

"You don't have to go out," he said.

"They're my children."

"They're his in law."

"They're mine in every other way," I said. "I'm going out."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Then I walk beside you," he said. "Not in front."

I nodded, and we went across the yard together.

The wolves of Redfern parted for us, and I heard a murmur go through them, too low for words.

At the gate Ansel smiled at me.

"Iris," he said. "It's Sunday."

"I know what day it is."

"Then you know what I said." He moved the twins forward. "Come to the guest house today and they eat breakfast with you. Stay in this place with him, and they eat it with Lorna."

"Mama!" Joey shouted, and pulled against his father's hand.
