Chapter 9: Spokane

We did not speak until we were inside the house with the door shut.

"Say it," I said.

Ronan stood in the front hall with his hands at his sides.

"Five years ago there was a Conclave in Spokane," he said. "Every Alpha in the Northwest, and their heirs. Ansel was there with his father, and he had a wife with him."

"That was me."

"It was you." He looked straight at me. "You were standing at the buffet with a glass of cider. You were laughing at something one of the wives said. The wind came through the door, and I smelled you from forty feet away."

My stomach turned over.

"I knew what it was," he said. "My wolf nearly broke my ribs trying to get out. And you looked up and you saw me, and you smiled the way you smile at anyone, and you turned back to your cider."

"You left."

"I left that night."

"You smelled your mate," I said, and my voice rose, "and you walked out of a room where she was standing beside a man who was dosing her, and you never came back."

"I didn't know about the dose."

"You didn't ask!"

"You wore a ring," he said hoarsely. "You were laughing. Everyone said you had two small children at home. I couldn't find a wolf in you anywhere, only the human shell. I thought fate had played the cruelest joke it knew: a mate who was happy, and married to someone else. If I took you from that, I'd be no better than the wolves who burned my father's hall."

"So you stayed away for five years."

"Yes."

"And I got six."
