Chapter 11: The Empty Chair
The council elder stood up slowly.
"Raimondo Corvi, this is a closed hearing of the Brancato family. You have no seat here."
"I have one," Raimondo said, and his voice carried the length of the room. "I have it under the treaty, and the treaty was touched yesterday."
He walked to the table.
He did not look at me, and I knew he was choosing not to.
"The Brancato ledger lists a daughter of the blood," he said. "One name was crossed out in red. You filed it with my office the same morning, because you had to."
"Elder, read the ninth clause aloud."
The elder did not move.
"Read it," Raimondo said. "Or I will."
The old man sat down heavily and opened a drawer.
He took out a folded paper, yellow with age and sealed with two crests, one of them the Brancato crest and one a black bird.
He read in a thin voice.
"Clause nine. In payment for the peace, the house of Brancato gives to the house of Corvi one daughter of its blood, to be the wife of the Corvi head. The marriage will be made when she is found and of age."
He stopped.
"If she is struck from the ledger of the Brancato, or refuses, or dies, the peace ends. The Corvi take the north docks and the Brancato territory."
The chamber was silent.
I felt the floor go out from under my feet.
"The daughter of the blood," I said.
"Yes," the elder said.
"Me."
My father stood up and put his hands on the table.
"Nerina," he said. "Sit down. I can explain."
"You'll explain from where you are," I said.
My voice shook, and I let it.
"What is the treaty?"
"After the war, Raimondo's father and I agreed on a truce." He spoke slowly, with his eyes on the wood. "Twenty-eight years ago. The price was a Brancato daughter to marry the Corvi son."
