Chapter 16: Hands Off
Nerina's POV
My father took Delfina home from the marina that night, and nobody stopped him.
The Gravesend boss let her go with a look that promised she would be asked for again.
By morning I had my answer about why Dad had come to the pier.
My middle brother had told him Delfina was meeting someone, and my father had followed her himself.
He had not come to save the family.
He had come to save her.
On Saturday I stood outside the cemetery gates in the cold, in a black coat I had bought for another funeral.
A black sedan pulled up behind me.
My youngest brother got out.
He was twenty-eight, six foot two, and he had not looked me in the eye since my lobby.
"Dad wants you at the grave," he said. "Get in the car."
"I'm walking in."
"Get in the car, Nerina."
"I'm a struck name. I have no family car."
He took a step toward me.
I saw his hand come up.
It closed around my upper arm, hard enough to bruise, and he started pulling me toward the sedan.
I did not scream.
I planted my heels and looked him full in the face.
"Who told you to put your hands on me?"
He kept pulling.
"Dad."
"Dad told you to grab a woman who isn't a Brancato anymore, in front of the whole family and the council elder?"
He stopped.
Behind him, along the path, the mourners had turned their heads.
The elder was among them, leaning on a cane.
"Say it again," I said. "Louder. Say Dad told you to drag a stranger to a funeral."
"Nerina."
"Because here is what I don't understand," I said. "If I'm a thief, you shouldn't want me at a grave. If I'm your sister, you shouldn't have your hand on me. Which one am I?"
