Chapter 5: Boxed In

I did not look back.

I hailed a cab at the gate and gave the driver my own address.

Forty minutes later it stopped in front of an apartment building on the other side of the city.

I had bought the place with my first big fee after I passed the bar, and no Brancato had ever set foot in it.

I checked every room and every window, and nobody had been inside.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

It was my cousin, the only relative who had been kind to me.

I heard you ran away from home, she wrote. Delfina posted an apology letter in the family chat. Your mother and your brothers are beside themselves over how upset she looks.

My middle brother messaged me next.

If you've got the nerve, stay away from this family forever. I'll have the butler delete your fingerprints from the gate system right now.

My youngest brother wrote a minute after him.

Dad hasn't stamped the removal in the ledger. Until he does, what the elder wrote is only a provisional entry.

I laid the form flat on the table, photographed it, and sent it to him.

The elder's seal sat in the corner.

Removal doesn't need the Don's approval, I wrote.

He called me, and I put him on speaker.

"Do you have to take it this far?" he asked.

"You left me at the compound, took the radios and took the files," I said. "If you weren't shutting me out on purpose, why do any of it?"

Behind him, Delfina was sobbing.

"Don't scold her," she said, small and breaking. "This is all my fault."
