The federal courtroom was bigger than the one downtown, and much quieter.
Bryce sat at the defense table in an orange county jumpsuit that made his face look gray.
He had been in custody for two days.
The prosecutor had asked the judge to keep him there until trial.
He said he had one witness who could explain why.
I sat in the second row, behind the government's table, where an assistant had told me I would be allowed.
Nathan sat beside me and did not speak.
When the courtroom door opened, I did not turn around at first.
Then I heard the heels, and I knew.
Kendra walked down the aisle in a plain black dress with her hair pulled back.
She wore no jewelry.
A lawyer in a rumpled suit walked at her elbow, one hand hovering near her back.
She did not look at the defense table.
The deputy swore her in, and she said "I do" in a voice that carried.
