Chapter 22: The Vote
The shareholder meeting was held in the Pinnacle auditorium on Friday morning, and every seat was taken.
Two hundred and sixty people had come.
Most of them were employees, because the employee stock plan had put a share into the hands of every driver and dispatcher.
They sat in their work jackets and good shirts, in the rows nearest the stage.
Behind them sat the early investors, in suits.
The Ridgeway partner had a seat on the aisle and a legal pad across her knee.
Nathan was in the front row, on the left.
He had not asked where to sit.
He had walked in and taken the seat directly in front of the podium.
When the cameras found him, he looked straight back into the lenses.
Walter opened the meeting with a rap of the gavel.
"Two slates are on the ballot," he said. "The board's, headed by Odessa Hale. And a second, filed by Marjorie Landry."
A rustle went through the room.
Marjorie sat alone at the end of the first row, in a black suit and a single strand of pearls.
Her lawyer was beside her.
Nobody else sat within two seats.
