Chapter 23: Harbor Springs

We reached Harbor Springs at dusk with the windows down.

The air smelled of pine and cold water, and I had forgotten it could smell like that.

The old couple two houses down were on their porch.

The wife saw the car and stood up and waved with her whole arm, the way she had when I was six.

I waved back with mine.

The green door had a new lock.

I had changed it myself, the week after Kendra left, and I had the only key.

Nathan carried the bags up the steps and stopped in the doorway, looking in.

The living room was as I had left it.

My grandmother's quilt lay folded on the couch.

My parents' photograph stood upright on the mantel, in its place.

On the hook by the kitchen door hung the blue bathrobe with the torn pocket, washed twice, smelling only of soap.

"This is where you grew up," he said.

"Summers. Every one until I was twenty."

"It's exactly you."

"Small and a little crooked?"

"It's the first house I've ever stood in that didn't want anything from me."

I put my hand in his.

We ate on the porch, soup from a can and bread from a gas station.
