The quartet had stopped playing.
Three hundred people were looking at a groom on his knees.
Trevor crawled forward and caught the hem of my red dress.
"I didn't know," he said. "Rebecca, I swear to God, I didn't know. If I'd known, I never would have..."
"Never would have what?"
He opened his mouth.
He closed it again.
"Say it," I said. "If you'd known I was rich, you never would have left me. Say it into the microphone. Everyone here wants to hear it."
He couldn't.
He just knelt there holding my hem.
"I built you," he said instead, and his voice cracked. "Ten years. You can't do this to me after ten years."
"I built you, Trevor. You just never looked down to see who was holding the ladder."
I pulled my dress out of his fingers.
"And on our tenth anniversary you told me the only thing I'd ever inherit was my mother's bad knees."
I looked down at him.
"It's funny. You're the one who can't stand up."
Somebody at table four laughed out loud.
