Chapter 13: Eight Percent

I lay there with the phone glowing against my chest.

Sebastian's hand was still warm on my stomach.

Eight percent of Hale.

I did the math without meaning to.

Three hundred and seventy-six million dollars.

I lifted his hand off me and set it on the sheet.

He woke at once. He always did.

"Rebecca?"

I turned on the lamp.

I held the phone out to him.

He read it.

I watched his face while he did.

He didn't look surprised.

That was the part I couldn't stand.

"It's real," he said. "She wrote that in June. She handed it to me across her desk."

"And you kept it."

"It was her handwriting. I keep all of it."

"Did you take it?"

He looked at me for a long time.

"If I say no," he said quietly, "will you believe me?"

I didn't answer.

He nodded.

"That's why I never showed you," he said.

I got out of bed.

My dress from the day was over the chair. I pulled it on over my head.

"Rebecca. There's more to that letter than one line."
