Chapter 14: Return to Sender
Nobody at the table moved.
The badge lay on the glass between the old board member's hands.
Sebastian Thorpe, Chief Operating Officer. A photo of him ten years younger, not smiling.
"Pick it up," I said.
He didn't look at me.
"Sir. The board doesn't need a vote. You have my resignation, in front of witnesses."
"Son," the old board member said. "Sit down before you do something stupid."
"I've already done it."
He turned to me then.
His eyes were red at the rims.
"You'll always wonder," he said. "Every time I touch you. Every time I say your name. You'll hear that letter."
"Sebastian."
"I won't be one more man you have to wonder about. You've had enough of those."
He walked out.
Through the glass wall I watched him cross the open floor.
Forty desks.
Forty people standing up, one after another, as he passed.
His assistant was crying at her desk with her hand over her mouth.
He touched her shoulder once on his way by.
Then the elevator took him.
