Chapter 14: The Tin

August VanDusen parked two streets from the Auchincloss townhouse and walked the rest with his collar up.

It was five to two, and Park Avenue was empty under the lamps.

The house had its lights off, all five floors of limestone, except for a thin gold line under one window on the second floor.

Eugenia's.

He went down the area steps to the kitchen door.

It opened before he knocked.

The housekeeper stood there in a gray cardigan over a nightdress, sixty-odd, small, with her hair in a net.

She looked at his face, and then past him for Eliot.

"He doesn't know I'm here," August said.

"Good." She stepped back to let him in. "He'd have wanted to carry it himself, and he'd have been caught."

The kitchen was enormous and spotless and smelled of lemon polish.

On the stove stood a kettle, and a single white cup upside down on a saucer, set out for the morning.

He looked at it for a second too long.

"Four years," the housekeeper said, very low. "Every night at ten, she made it herself. She wouldn't let me. She said a husband's mother should pour for her son's husband."

"And you carried the tray."

"Up to the door. She took it in."

"You didn't know."

"I thought it was a tonic. She said it was for his nerves." Her mouth shook. "He never drank it hot, the poor boy. He drank it down like medicine, because she watched."
