Chapter 16: The Board
"Mr. VanDusen signed a sworn statement that he sat on a theft for four years," said the man from the fund. "I'd like that on the record before anyone shows me a slide."
It was the second Monday of December, and the boardroom on the thirty-fourth floor was full.
A dozen chairs, a dozen grim faces, and a silver pitcher of water nobody had touched.
August sat at the head of the table with his hands folded.
He did not defend himself.
Eliot, three chairs down, put his pen on the pad.
"It's on the record," he said. "He signed it so it would be."
"With respect, Mr. Standish, you're the chief scientist, not a director. This is a board matter."
"Then let me make it one."
The man from the fund was fifty, tanned, in a very good suit.
He had spent the last ten minutes talking over everybody who was not a man.
He looked at Eliot's sweater.
Then he looked, for a half second, at the flat place below Eliot's belt.
Audra had told the room nothing, but the room had noticed anyway.
"You've been here eleven weeks," the man said. "VanDusen has been burning cash for eleven years. Auchincloss debuts its second-generation product in five weeks, and we have a hearing, a scandal and a newcomer who wants us to bet the quarter on a notebook."
