Chapter 20: The Decree

The courtroom was the same one where I had told a room full of strangers what I saw.

It was smaller than I remembered.

Winslow sat at the table on the left in his good coat, and I sat at the table on the right beside my lawyer with the grey braid.

We had come in separate cars, and we had not spoken in the corridor.

He had looked at me once through the glass of the door, and I had looked back.

Bea sat in the gallery with a paper bag of muffins she had been told twice not to open.

Eleanor sat in the last row, alone, with her hands folded on her bag.

She had asked if she might come, and I had said yes.

"All rise," said the clerk.

The judge came in and sat.

She was the same woman who had let me keep June in this room.

She opened a folder and looked at it for a long time.

"This is a final hearing on the petition for divorce," she said. "Mr. Wentworth, you have signed the petition."

"I have, Your Honor."

"You originally refused to."

"I did."

"What changed?"

"I asked her to let me go," Winslow said. "And I found out I didn't get to decide that."

The judge's eyebrows rose.

"Mrs. Wentworth, you've heard the terms. The child lives primarily with you. Mr. Wentworth has liberal access. The property is divided as your attorney has set out."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Is the marriage irretrievably broken?"

I stood up.

The question was one I had rehearsed in the shower for weeks.

Yes was the answer.
