My stepmother found me in the OB clinic waiting room at seven the next morning.

I was thirty-one weeks along, with my feet up on a chair and Rhys beside me holding a decaf.

The second I saw her pearls in the doorway, I knew Lenore had called her.

"Valeria."

She crossed the room in her good camel coat with a smile pulled tight across her face.

A woman with a toddler glanced up.

Two other couples stopped pretending to read.

"There you are," my stepmother said, loudly. "I've been calling you for days. Sweetheart, this has all gotten out of hand."

"I haven't had a call from you since you changed the locks."

"I was upset. We were all upset." She sat in the chair beside me without being invited, and put her hand on mine. "It's cold, and you're expecting, and the house is empty without you. Bridget has run off. I want you home. The back room is yours. We'll say no more about the rent."

Rhys went still.

"The rent," I said.

"The little arrangement. It doesn't matter."

"What did I pay you for the back room, every month, for three years?"
