Chapter 25: Kilgore's Days
I stood in Vernie's kitchen in Deke's shirt with the phone cord wrapped around my hand.
"She's lying," I said.
"I know she's lying. Right now it's a lie on paper." My lawyer sighed. "At the hearing she says it from the witness stand. After that she's in it with Doreen for good. She can't take it back without going to jail."
"So she hasn't said it out loud yet."
"Not under oath."
"What if she saw it first?" I said. "Before she swears. In front of everybody."
"I told you to keep that drive in your pocket," she said.
"You told me to show it when it couldn't be answered."
"The notary's Doreen's bridge partner," she said slowly. "She'll be in the front row on the square a week from tomorrow. Doreen never goes anywhere without her."
"I know."
"I'm your lawyer, not your mother," she said. "Make two copies first."
Labor Day was hot by nine in the morning.
Banners hung on every lamppost on the Cypress Flat square.
