Chapter 9: Nothing in My Name
The sheriff got out of his cruiser slowly.
He looked past Doreen at the porch and took the hat all the way off.
"Morning, Miss Vernie."
"Don't you Miss Vernie me," Vernie said from the doorway. "What do you want?"
"Ma'am, I've got a stolen vehicle report. White Ford F-250, titled to Kilgore's Bar-B-Q, Incorporated." He glanced at his notepad. "Reported in this location this morning."
Doreen got into her Cadillac and shut the door.
She didn't leave.
She sat behind the windshield with her hands on the wheel and watched.
I came down the steps.
"It's not stolen," I said. "I've driven it every day for six years."
"Is it in your name, ma'am?"
I opened my mouth.
I closed it again.
"No," I said.
"Who's it in?"
"The company."
"Are you an officer of the company?"
"I'm the pitmaster."
He looked at his notepad for a long time.
"Ma'am, are you Raylene Kilgore?"
"Yes."
"I want to be real clear, Mrs. Kilgore. I've got no papers on you. Nobody's asked me to give you anything, and if they had, I'd tell them I've got a county to run." He sighed. "But I've got a stolen truck report from the owner, and I've got to take the truck."
Vernie came down the steps and stood next to me with the broom.
"It's in my barn," she said. "Under a tarp. You want it, you pull it out yourself."
He did.
He called a wrecker out of Leakey, and we stood in the barn door and watched them drag the blue tarp off.
My spare apron was on the passenger seat.
Macey's school hoodie was in the back.
I went up on the flatbed and took my spare apron and her hoodie.
Nobody stopped me.
Doreen's Cadillac pulled out of the lot before the wrecker did.
