Bradley looked down at my wife on her knees in the wet grass, and his face softened.

"There. That's all I wanted."

He patted her hand and unhooked it from his sleeve.

"Get up, Melanie. You're making the neighbors uncomfortable."

She stayed where she was.

"Here's how it goes," Bradley said to me. He spoke pleasantly. "You're a good guy, Dal. You always were. So I'll be fair. Eric goes back to school on Monday. You're out of this house by Sunday night, and you stay away from the boy."

"No."

"Then Monday morning every parent in his class gets a link."

"To what?"

"You'll find out when they do."

"You can't scare me with a video."

"I'm not scaring you." He looked at Melanie. "I'm scaring her. Watch her."

I looked down.

Her face was bloodless, and her eyes were closed.

"Sunday night," Bradley said again. "I'll even let you say goodbye."

He walked to his car with his hands in his pockets, and the engine started without a hurry.

The neighbor in the bathrobe took half a step toward me.

"Do you want me to call someone?"

"No. Thank you. Go inside."

"That man..."

"Please go inside."

He went.

One by one the porch lights across the street clicked off, and the street was dark again.
