Chapter 4: Corridor

I went back up and found Melanie at the nurses' station, signing Eric's forms.

I took the pen out of her hand.

"Walk with me."

"Dalton, I need to..."

"Now."

She looked at my face and followed me down the corridor, to a spot beside the linen cart.

The doctor from last night was at the far end, reading a chart.

A nurse stood at the desk behind us.

I did not care who heard.

I held up my phone with the lab's email open.

"Read it."

She read it.

I watched her eyes go across the screen and stop on the last line.

For a moment she did not breathe.

Then she shook her head, hard.

"That's a mistake. It has to be. Those labs mix up samples all the time."

"They took both swabs in front of me."

"Then it's a contamination, or..."

"The hospital found it first," I said. "His blood is type O. Mine is AB. Yours is A. Do you want me to ask the doctor to explain it to you?"

She said nothing.

Her lips were pressed white.

"I went to your office yesterday," I said.

Her eyes came up.

"I stood outside your door."

"Dalton."

"You told your friend you married me for Eric. You said you wait for the morning every night. You said every time I touch you, you want to scrub your skin raw."

My voice stayed quiet, and that scared me more than shouting would have.

"So say it to me now. Whose son is he?"

I watched her face, and I watched something close in it.

Her face went blank.

She straightened her jacket.
