Chapter 12: Monday Night

"Say it," Bram said.

He set his briefcase on the floor and stayed by the door.

He did not come closer, and he did not look away.

"Henry was your brother," I said.

"Yes."

"And I'm the one who shot him."

"Yes."

The word landed without any heat in it, and that was worse.

I had expected shouting.

I had expected his hands on me.

"I didn't know," I said.

"I know."

"I was told the man Pavel named sold girls."

"I know that too."

Bram took one step into the room.

"He gave you a plate and a time," he said. "He didn't give you a face."

"How do you know that?"

"Because you'd have stopped if you'd seen his."

I laughed, a terrible sound.

"You don't know that."

"I watched you walk away from a car in Milwaukee in September with a little girl in the back seat."

My whole body went still.

"Two weeks before the cabin," he said. "My chief found it when he went looking for who you were."

"The crew told you."

"The crew told me nothing. A traffic camera did."

He said it flatly.

"You let a target live because a child was watching," he said. "That's not a killer. That's a woman who got lied to."

"I still did it."

"You did."

"I still shot him, Bram."

"You did."

I sat down, because my legs had decided for me.

The chair was hard and I was glad of it.
