Chapter 17: The Price

Shawna shut the door and stood outside it with her arms folded.
The lawyer laid a leather folder on the crate of glass wands and opened it.
"Mr. Merrick's instructions were very clear," he said. "I advised against all of them."
"Say it plainly," Leon said.
The lawyer took a breath.
"This morning at eight o'clock, Mr. Merrick transferred a fifth of his shares in Merrick Defense into two trusts."
"The first is for the women who make the toys in your line."
"The second is for Chicago Children's."

"What does that mean?" I said.
"It means that every year, a share of what Merrick Defense earns goes to wages for your makers and to the hospital," Leon said.
