Chapter 13: Whose Hand
"He was my father," I said.
Katie did not move.
The curtains were drawn, and the only light in the room came from a lamp with a crooked shade.
It lit the page on her knees and half of her face.
"Your father," she said.
"Gordon Westerfield."
"Westerfield Freight. Westerfield Capital." She said each word as if she were setting down plates. "Eugenia Westerfield. The champagne man."
"Stepmother and stepbrother."
"You told me your name was Mason."
"It is. I took it at nineteen, when she had me walked off the estate."
She laughed, one short breath through her nose.
"I married a Westerfield in a courthouse basement, and I paid twenty-two dollars for the ring."
"Katie."
"Don't." She held up one hand without looking at me. "I'm reading."
She bent over the page.
Her lips moved, and then she read it aloud.
She read low and flat.
"I, Gordon Westerfield, took four million dollars from the Westerfield Freight pension reserve in the spring of that year."
