Chapter 20: Walked Out

Three hundred people turned from Niles to me.

I stood up.

I didn't need a microphone.

The ballroom was quiet enough that I could hear the roses breathing.

"Then I'll see you Monday," I said. "Wear something nice, Niles. It'll be on film."

Clay stood up beside me.

We walked out of the ballroom down the same aisle Bailey had, with every face turning to follow us.

Behind us, I heard Sydney's voice ring out by the cake table.

"Well, it's paid for! Who wants a slice?"

Half the room got up.

On Monday morning at nine, Niles called an emergency meeting of the Kenward board.

He did it himself, by email, at six a.m.

One item on the agenda.

"Authorization to issue new shares."

"He's going to print stock," Clay said, reading it over my shoulder in the kitchen. "Flood the company with new shares, sell them to his friends cheap, and shrink everybody else's."

"Down to nothing," I said. "By Monday. He meant it literally."

"He needs fifty-three percent to do it."

"He has fifty-three percent."

Clay looked at me.

"Does he?"

The glass boardroom on the ninth floor was full again.

So was the office outside it.

Nobody was even pretending to work.

The girl from social had taken the desk closest to the glass.

The two guys from sales were standing on chairs at the back.

Niles sat at the head of the table.

He'd shaved badly. There was a nick on his jaw.

The four investors sat on my side, the same as before.

The chair at Niles's right hand was empty.

"Percy's running late," Niles said to the room. "He'll be here. Let's not waste time."

"Before your item," I said, "I have a motion."

"Denied."

"You can't deny a motion. You can only vote on it." I stood. "I move to remove Niles Kenward as chief executive and as chairman of this board."

"We did this on Thursday, Liv."
