Chapter 16: The Table
The table went black under my hands and started to pull.
Not hard. Gentle. Like water going out.
It wanted what I had. It didn't care what that was.
I felt it go for the seven years first.
That was the biggest thing I had. Seven years of code I couldn't show, nine games with somebody else's name on them, a note in a build that nobody ever read until Fin.
It pulled and I held.
"Get back," Fin said.
I couldn't get back. My hands were on the table and the table had them.
The woman behind me let go of my coat and ran.
That was good. That was the one thing that mattered.
I stood there and let the table pull.
It took the seven years and I let it. It was nothing but a chair and a cold coffee at two in the morning.
It took the awards dinner and I let it.
It took the day my mother asked me what I did at work and I said I was in software.
It took the sunset. Seven years of counting down to a sunset that was never going to come.
Then it went for the game.
I felt it find it. The whole thing, every line, a year of nights.
I put my hands flat on the table and I pushed back.
"No."
The table pulled harder.
