Chapter 4: Terms

The suite was on the top floor of the Lakeshore Grand, and the elevator opened straight into it.

Becky stood in the middle of the carpet and looked at the lake through the glass wall.

Behind her, the wheelchair stopped.

"Say it," Kendrick said.

"Vanessa Sholes." She turned. "Your bride was Vanessa."

"Yes."

"The woman who sent my fiance to a hospital that didn't know her name. The woman who told me this morning she was in bed with the flu."

"Yes."

Becky sat down on the arm of a sofa, because her knees had stopped helping.

"And you didn't tell me in the hallway."

"I didn't know it was the same Vanessa," Kendrick said. "I knew my bride was gone and I knew a bride in white had walked up to me. That was everything I knew."

His face did not change, but he waited for her to look at him before he went on.

"Max found it out ten minutes ago. Her phone was in the hotel lot, in a trash can by the loading dock. Under it was a second phone, and the second phone has a man's name saved as the first contact. Colby."

Becky closed her eyes.

Five years of being the one who stayed, and the other woman had been walking up the east corridor in a white dress this morning, a hundred feet from her.

"She was supposed to be at my wedding," Becky said. "She texted me. Kind, and sorry, and sick. She never meant to come."

"She never meant to marry me either," Kendrick said, and for the first time something raw showed under the level voice. "I think she meant to be Mrs. Strathmore for the money and keep him for the rest."

He said it without self-pity, and that was worse.
