Chapter 6: The Old Man's Cane

Wendell Strathmore came out of the elevator swinging a cane.

He was a tall old man in a navy three-piece suit, with white hair brushed straight back and bright blue eyes that went over the room in one sweep.

They landed on Becky.

"There she is," he said. "Don't stand up. Don't curtsy. Nobody curtsies in this family, it's a waste of a good knee."

Becky had half risen, and she sat back down.

"Grandfather," Kendrick said. "You were told to stay in Connecticut."

"I was told a great many things this morning." Wendell planted the cane and leaned on it. "I was told my grandson's bride had vanished an hour before the vows, and then I was told he had married some other girl in the wrong ballroom, and neither piece of news was something I could hear sitting down."

"Who told you?"

"Everybody. A hotel has a very fast staff." He turned his bright eyes back to Becky. "Young lady. Your name."

"Becky Farrant."

"And what do you do, Becky Farrant?"

"I'm an assistant manager at a pastry shop."

"Do you make anything?"

"Every morning. Laminated dough, mostly. Croissants."

"Excellent." The old man looked pleased. "Kendrick has not eaten a good croissant in two years, because the one place that made them for him closed. What do you think of my grandson?"

Becky looked at Kendrick.

He had gone very still, with a look she was learning to read, which meant he wanted to disappear and would sit through it.

"I think he sat in a hallway while a hundred people looked for a woman who left him," she said, "and when a stranger in a ruined dress asked him to marry her, he asked her one question and then said yes."

"Hm." Wendell's cane tapped the floor. "And what do you think of yourself?"
