Chapter 4: The Roof Door

I did not cry at the bank either.

I folded the slip into a square and put it in the pocket of Emmett's jacket.

The teller said she was sorry, and I said it was not her fault.

On the sidewalk the wind off the river had turned cold, and my dress flapped around my legs.

Emmett opened the car door for me and did not say anything stupid.

I loved that, a little, and I did not want to.

"The account was joint," I said, once we were driving. "Legally he can take it."

"That's what the lawyer will say."

"Is the lawyer going to say anything good?"

"I'll find out."

"I don't want you to pay for him."

"I won't," he said. "You told me. No money."

"I meant it."

"I know you did."

He took the curve onto West Seventh Street slowly.

We passed the old brick bulk of the brewery, with the name on its water tower in faded white letters.

RAUSCH.

It had been there forever.

He turned into a gravel lot behind it.

"I live above the bottling hall," he said. "It's a brick building with a roof door. It's not fancy."

"Is there a guest room?"

"Two."

"Good."

"I'm going to say something and I need you to know I mean it."

"Go ahead."

"You don't owe me anything for today. If you want to go to your apartment tonight, I'll drive you. If you want to go to your mother's, I'll drive you there. The year is yours to take or cancel."

I looked at the brick wall in front of the car.
