Chapter 16: The File

Valerio hung up on the Boston lawyer and sat very still.

Paola took Tito out to the garden to look for Lawyer's cousins.

"He witnessed it," I said. "He sat in that restaurant and signed his name under mine. Now he's calling it a fraud."

"He's calling you a fraud," Valerio said. "A woman I bought."

"Same thing, to a judge."

I started pacing the kitchen.

"If the marriage is void, I'm nobody. I'm the help. Fiorella gets to say Tito's being raised by a stranger on a payroll."

"Then we take the payroll away."

I stopped.

Valerio got up and went to the drawer under the coffee pot, where the paperwork lived.

He came back with the contract.

He laid it on the long table between us, the way he had at the restaurant.

My handwriting ran up and down the margins. Bar course. Lock on the inside. Nobody touches me unless I say so.

"I'll burn it," he said. "Tonight. In the sink."

"That doesn't undo it. He has a copy."

"I know." He looked at me. "So marry me for real."

The kitchen was very quiet.

Through the window I could see Tito lying on his stomach in the grass with his face an inch from a flowerbed.

"We're already married," I said.

"On paper. For a year. For two million dollars." His voice was low and level. "I want the other kind. Church, if you want church. No end date. No price."

"Valerio."

"You don't have to answer today."

"I'm not going to answer today."

"Good."
