Chapter 5: Her Briefs

Valerio came home at seven.

Paola had already told him. I could see it in how he took his coat off, slowly.

Tito ran at his legs.

"I got two cookies yesterday," Tito said. "And Nonna came to school and Josephine said no."

"I heard."

"She said no really loud."

"I didn't, actually," I said. "I said it very calmly."

"Calmly loud," Tito said.

Valerio picked him up and looked at me over his son's curls.

"After he's asleep," he said.

Dinner was Paola's rigatoni at one end of the long table.

Tito ate four noodles and lectured us about frogs.

Paola asked me what I'd said to Fiorella, word for word, and made me say it twice.

"Under oath," she repeated, delighted. "I'm getting that on a mug."

Bedtime took one story and one question.

"Is Nonna still sad?" he asked.

"Probably."

"Can we make her a card?"

"Tomorrow," I said, and he was asleep.

Valerio was waiting in the kitchen.

He'd made coffee in a little silver pot and poured two cups.

I sat across the long table from him.

"She knew about the pills," I said. "Not that I took them. Everyone at the firm saw that bottle."

"Then what?"

"The color. The times. Nine and nine."

He waited.

"Whitman gave them to me himself, every night. He liked to watch me swallow them." I wrapped both hands around the cup. "Nobody else knew the schedule. Not his parents. Not my own friends, the ones he let me keep."

"You're saying my lawyer talks to Fiorella Gatti."

"I'm saying he sells to her."
