Chapter 10: The Island Boat
The white truck parked on the car deck of the Vinalhaven ferry had TENANTS HARBOR stenciled across its tailgate.
I saw it from the stairs, and I stopped, and Torsten walked into my back.
"What?"
"That truck."
"That's ours." He looked over my head, pleased. "That's the Monday and Thursday load. It's been picking up at Dad's since June."
"It's going to the island."
"It's going to your father's pound. Where else?"
I started up the stairs again.
I told myself that a dealer's truck going home was the least interesting thing on the Penobscot Bay.
The ferry was a big flat-bottomed boat, blue and white, with a wide upper deck and wooden benches bolted along the rails.
It was the second Friday in August.
The wind came across the water cool and hard, and the sky was a clean washed blue.
A line of islands lay low and green on the horizon.
We took a bench on the sunny side and Torsten sat next to me and put his arm along the back.
