Dumped on His Wharf, I Married His Brother and Set Their Price novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: The Board
The scale house was lit at five on Monday morning, two days after Christmas.
Thirty-one skippers stood in the cold outside it with paper cups in their hands.
Torsten unlocked the door with the key he had carried since the tenth of October.
Nobody went in until I did.
Behind the desk the blackboard was wiped black, with a stub of white chalk lying in the tray.
I had called a price every Monday since the twelfth of October.
My father had brought the pen that morning, as he said he would.
He had signed the call over to me at this desk, with the skippers' wives watching through the window.
My terms were short.
The price went up on every board in the county, in the same hour, in the same chalk.
Nobody got a cent in secret, from anyone, ever.
And a favor was only a price you had not said aloud.
I had never chalked it myself.
I stood in front of the board in my wool coat and looked up.
The top line was well over my head.
"Mrs. Seavey," Torsten said behind me. "Need a boost?"
"I do."
He did not use a ladder.
He put both hands around my waist and lifted me, the whole way off the floor.
My face came level with the top edge of the board.
The steel ring on his finger pressed cold against my ribs.
"Can you reach?" he said.
"I can reach."
I took up the chalk.
It was a good stub, square and dry, and it made a dry sound on the black.
