Chapter 17: The Spear
I pushed out of his arms.
I got as far as the wall before my legs gave, and I sat down hard against the wet stone, under the empty rings.
He didn't follow me.
He stayed on his knees in the middle of the floor, beside the open cuffs, with his hands on his thighs.
"Say the rest," I said.
"Nysa."
"You've had eight days to think how to say it. Say it."
He looked at the cuffs.
"The chains opened when you died," he said. "I carried you up the stair."
"Where?"
"Into the Sun Hall. It was the Feast. Every god on the Heights was in there, waiting for Phaedon to swear."
I could see it.
Him coming out from behind the throne with a dead woman in his arms and blood on his spear.
"Phaedon got up on the dais," Theron said. "He pointed at me. He said, my uncle has murdered my wife."
"And you said?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"It was true enough," he said. "I'd spent three nights trying to break into this Vault, and I couldn't get through the door."
