Chapter 25: First Light
I carried the Oath Flame into the Sun Hall myself, at sunrise, in both hands.
Nobody had asked me to bring it.
The heir would swear on my name today, and I wanted him to do it with my mother's flame in his face.
The court parted for me down the gold floor.
Every god on the Heights was there, in their best, the way they'd come to my wedding to watch a burning.
I set the bronze lamp on the steps of the dais, beside the cushion with my cuff on it.
Then I went and stood at the front with my husband, and closed my mouth.
Theron stood beside me in clean black, with linen at his wrists.
He was free and he was still accused, and the King had seated him in the front row.
Every so often somebody looked at his wrists and away.
Two places were empty along the wall where the Iron House stood.
Eudora's, and the captain's.
I didn't look at them.
The harps began.
Ismene came up the gold floor in ivory silk and a hundred pearl buttons, with her gold glove held stiff at her side.
