Chapter 7: The Parade Ground

"He can't do that," I said. "Can he do that?"

"He's the King," Theron said. "He can do what he likes with his legion."

"It's your legion."

"It was my brother's before it was mine."

He shut the shutter.

"Get dressed," he said. "Something warm. It's windy on the ground at noon."

"You're going to stand there and watch him take it?"

"I'm going to stand there," he said, "and you're going to watch."

At noon the wind came off the north rim.

The Sky Legion stood in its ranks on the parade ground, four hundred men in black leather with their spears grounded, and nobody made a sound.

Half the Heights had come up to see.

They lined the low wall around the field in their cloaks, drinking hot wine out of cups, the way they'd come to my wedding.

Phaedon rode in at the stroke of noon on his white horse.

He'd had gold armor made.

A herald walked ahead of him with the legion's banner, a black spear on grey, rolled on its pole.

Theron stood alone at the head of the ranks with his hands behind his back.

I stood beside him because I was his wife and I wasn't going anywhere.

Phaedon reined in and looked down at us.

"Uncle," he said. "Thank you for keeping them warm for me."

Theron said nothing.

Phaedon turned in the saddle and raised his voice for the wall.

"Sky Legion! Your new commander greets you!"

Four hundred men stood and looked at him.

"Salute," Phaedon said.

Nobody moved.

His smile thinned.

"Ah," he said. "Of course. You want to salute the lady first."

He swung his horse around to face me.

"Go on, then. Salute my uncle's garland girl. She's very generous with her garlands." He leaned down toward the front rank. "Last week it was nearly mine. Last night it was his. Next week, any one of you could get lucky."
