The bearded artist took the shaved-head woman by the elbow.
This time he didn't ask.
They went out the red door, and the bell rang behind them, and then it was just us and the phone on the counter.
"How long?" I said.
"Two years."
"Two years."
"Ellis is right about one thing," Bram said. "I have a file. Every trust your husband's firm runs is in the court records if you know where to look. I've been looking since I got out of the Navy."
"How many?"
"Eleven. Eleven kids with settlements, and the firm as trustee." He kept his hands flat on the counter. "Tilly's was the biggest. I read about the crash. I read the settlement. It closed too fast and too cheap, and I knew why before I knew how."
"And then?"
"And then the Children's Fund put out its newsletter." His mouth twisted. "There was a picture on page two. Ellis and his wife and their foster daughter at the spring gala. The Clagetts, opening their home. Tilly was in a blue dress. She was holding a crab."
