Chapter 18: The Glass Booth

I picked the ring up off the pillow, and it was cold.

Rook was behind me in the doorway with his shirt half buttoned.

"Did you grant her a release?" I said.

"I was in your bed." His voice was flat and furious. "I granted nothing."

"Then how?"

"She must have said it to the door. The house hears the door." He looked at the ring in my palm. "Gilt told us the Master grants it. He did not tell us it needs no Master."

Loretta was shaking in the corridor with her fork in both fists.

"He promised her supper," she said. "She told me at dinner. She said she only wanted to see the kitchen."

"Come on," I said.

We ran to the chapel, the five of us, with Rook in front.

The pews were full again. Monsters sat in the middle of the night with their hands in their laps and their eyes on the aisle.

Over the aisle hung a glass booth, tall and narrow and lit white from inside.

The nurse stood in it with both hands pressed to the glass.

She had no ring. Her hospital badge was still pinned to her bodice.

"Kerensa," she said, muffled. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Don't apologize," I said. "Don't say anything."

"He said she was waiting. I heard her laugh." Her eyes were wet. "I opened the door and the cake was on the table. It was her cake. It had the unicorn."
