Chapter 16: Truck Cab

Hallie's POV

I had my boots on before Eli finished telling the lawyer to wait on the porch.

Rhonda was already awake and standing in the hall, pulling Whitney up off the couch by her good hand.

"Back door," Eli said, over his shoulder. "The shed. The plow truck has a full tank."

"You can't leave," Rhonda said. "They'll say you're harboring."

"They've already said it. I have the paper."

"Then stay and stall," I said. "I'll go with Rhonda."

"No," Eli said. "You go with me. Rhonda takes Whitney in your car and meets us at the fire hall. A truck full of women is a story. A truck with one man in it and a woman in my shirt is only a rumor."

"That's the dumbest logic I ever heard," Rhonda said, and grabbed her keys.

I grabbed the bottle of milk from the counter and zipped it inside my coat.

Out front, a car door shut.

Boots on the porch. The lawyer's quiet voice, and then a heavier one I knew.

It was the deputy from the cabin.

"Mr. Cardwell," he said. "I've got an order for Mrs. Garver. I need you to open the door."

"Have you got a warrant for my house?"

"I've got an order for her."

"That isn't the same thing, Deputy, and you know it."

I slid out the back with my heart slamming.

The air was so cold it hurt my teeth. The shed stood forty feet across the snow.

Behind me, I heard Eli say, loud and level, "I'll call the sheriff and ask if I'm allowed to refuse. Hold on."

I didn't hear the answer.

I reached the shed and climbed up into the cab of the plow truck, and it still smelled like cedar and old coffee.
