Chapter 15: The Slate
Brigid read the banner once and turned to face the yard.
Forty soldiers stood in the grey light with their breath showing.
"Noon," she said. "That is when he comes. Until then we eat, we sharpen, and nobody leaves the wall."
"Captain," said an old soldier, "can he do what the sign says?"
"He can try."
She looked at Wes.
Then she walked off to see to the gate, and her hand brushed his as she passed.
Tamsin caught his sleeve before he had taken a step.
"Come with me," she said. "Gravel dug something out of the ditch last night, and I've had a look at it."
Her hayloft above the stables was cold and smelled of horse.

A thin white line ran around the edge.
"One of the faceless ones dropped it when they went down," Tamsin said. "The bodies vanished, and this stayed. Gravel wouldn't leave it alone."
"Can you open it?"
"I can open anything."
She knelt with a pick in each hand and her tongue between her teeth.
Wes watched her work.
She did not hurry, and her fingers never stopped moving.
Something clicked, and the slate lit.
Lines of small square type rose from its face.

Tamsin read them aloud slowly, because she had only learned his letters from the signs in the keep.
When she reached the last line, she stopped.
