Chapter 14: The Computer Man
There was one person who had ever been alone in that house with my voice.
I found him in my father's study, bent over the old computer, with a screwdriver and a plastic bag of cables.
He was the man who had set it up for me six years ago, and he had come every month since to "back up the system."
He wore a short-sleeved shirt and glasses, and he had once brought me a birthday card.
"Miss Lucia," he said, standing too fast. "I came to check the drives. With your father in the hospital, I thought."
"Sit down."
He sat.
Bianca locked the study door.
Remo took the chair in front of it, one arm in the sling, and put his good hand on his knee.
"You don't have to do it," the man said, looking at Remo. "I'll tell you whatever you want."
"I haven't asked anything," I said.
"You came in with that face."
"Someone cut the tape in the safe behind the screen," I said. "It was done this week. Whoever did it used a copy of the booth key."
"I don't know about a safe."
"I didn't say what was on the tape."
His mouth opened and closed.
On the desk, beside the screwdriver, lay a ring of keys with a tag on it that said DOWNSTAIRS.
I picked it up.
The brass key on the ring matched the one in my pocket, tooth for tooth.
"My father keeps every spare key in this drawer," the man said, in a small voice. "I only copied it twice. I was told I'd lose my brother's house otherwise."
"Told by who?"
He looked at the carpet.
"Say it to me, in front of the people you work for," I said.
"Mr. Ruzzo." His voice cracked. "Silvio Ruzzo. He has my brother's house. My brother's mortgage. He said I could keep my brother in it."
Bianca made a sound of disgust.
