Chapter 4: The Voicemail

Danny Frost's mother lived on the second floor of a brick building on Atwells Avenue, above a bakery.

I went the next morning at eight, with Bianca beside me and Remo waiting in the Lincoln across the street.

He had not said a word since the bar.

I had not asked him again.

The woman who opened the door was small and grey, in a housecoat and slippers.

She looked at me for a long time.

"You're Marianna's girl," she said.

"I'm Lucia."

"I know who you are." Her hand shook on the doorframe. "I've been waiting six years for one of you to knock."

She let us in and sat us at a kitchen table with a plastic cloth.

Down the hall, a door stood open on a narrow bed made up with a blue blanket.

"That's his room," she said. "I wash the sheets on Sundays."

I couldn't speak.

"Your father told me my son left town," she said. "He came himself, the morning after your mother's funeral, with two men. He stood in this kitchen and said Danny had run off and left a debt."

"Danny left a debt?"

"Danny never owed anybody a nickel. He worked at the print shop for his uncle."

Bianca reached over and covered my hand.

"He called me that night," Danny's mother said. "After the funeral. I was at the sink, and I let it go to the machine because I was angry he hadn't come to dinner."
