Chapter 14: Not Half in Love

I went down the stairs alone, because Tilda wanted to come and I wouldn't let her.

Dax was kneeling on the wet sidewalk in his good suit.

The rain had flattened his hair, and his white shirt was see-through at the shoulders.

I stopped on the top step with the door open behind me.

"Get up," I said.

"Not until you hear me."

"Then you'll be there a while."

He laughed, a thin sound with nothing behind it.

"She used me, Jo."

"I heard her say it in front of eight hundred people."

"Before she ever sang a note for me, she was asking about you."

I did not move.

"The first week," Dax said. "She came to my hotel room with a bottle of wine and said she'd love to know who writes my songs."

"And you told her."

"I told her it was me."

"And she believed you?"

"She said she did." His mouth twisted. "Then she asked where you kept your notebooks. She asked which cabinet. She asked what you did at night when I was on the road."

Cold rain ran down the back of my collar.

"You gave her the key to my studio," I said.

"I gave her everything. I thought she loved me."

"You were married."

"You were never home."

"I was at the kitchen table writing your second album."

He flinched, and for a second the shine went off him.

"The party was her idea," he said. "The dress, the divorce, the toast. She said it would be the most powerful night of my life. She said you'd sign and slink off."

"And the third verse?"

"She copied it out of your notebook. She had it in her purse for a month."

I thought of the green dress hanging in the fitting room, and how Kiera had pinned the hem with her mouth full of pins.
