Chapter 24: The Lamp on the Porch
Two thousand people filled the theater on the night of the first show.
I stood in the wings in my own dress, holding my own guitar, with my father's pick in my pocket.
My hands were not shaking.
That surprised me.
Tilda sat at the sound board at the back of the house, with her headphones around her neck and a little paper sign taped over her station.
It read: ENGINEER. DO NOT TOUCH.
Her voice came into my earpiece, cracked and delighted.
"Two thousand and eleven, Jo. They stacked chairs in the aisles."
"Don't tell me the number."
"I'm telling you the number. Dax's farewell tour sold three hundred seats in a city of two million."
"Tilda."
"Sorry. I'll only gloat once."
"I can hear them breathing from here."
"That's the sound of a sold-out room. Savor it."
Jude stood beside me with his arms folded and his shoulder against the wall.
He wore the charcoal jacket I liked, the rumpled one, and the ring on my finger had a twin on his.
We had married three days ago at the courthouse with no photographer, and Tilda had cried again.
"Last chance to run," he said.
"I run toward things now."
"Good."
He kissed my forehead and then my mouth, quickly, and let me go.
Behind him, on the stage floor, a crew member was lining up the set list on the monitor.
Every song on it had been written in my left hand, in the black notebooks, and every title had a line under it that read: words and music, Joanna Ellery.
