Chapter 20: The Proxy
Adele's hand stayed on my arm.
Her fingers were light and perfectly steady.
The laugh was still on her face when she turned to the crowd, and for a second I thought it might work.
A man coughed.
A woman near the front looked down at her napkin.
People wanted very badly to believe her, because the other thing was too uncomfortable to hold.
"The poor girl," Adele said gently.
"We've all been so worried."
"Let's give her a moment, and move on to the business of the evening."
She nodded at Merritt, who had risen from his seat at the head table.
"Item six," Merritt said into a second microphone.
"The annual reaffirmation of the family voting proxy, which the board has approved every year since Warren's passing."
"All in favor?"
Nobody answered.
He lifted his hand to show how it was done.
"Item six is mine," a voice said from the back of the room.
It wasn't loud.
It didn't have to be.
It came down the whole length of the ballroom in a low, even tone, and three hundred heads turned toward the brass doors.
