Chapter 5: Elevator Eight

"I didn't tell you about the archive," I said.

I was still sitting on the concrete step with my shoes beside me.

"You asked the guard on nine about the east archive in your first week," Nolan said. "He mentions everything to me."

It was a plain answer, and it was probably true.

I put my shoes on and held the rail to get up.

He offered his hand and I walked around it.

"Goodnight, Mr. Tunstall," I said.

"Goodnight, Ms. Collins."

I went down the stairs one at a time, and he stood on the landing and did not follow me.

I had slept on Vicki's lumpy sofa bed since the café, because I would not go back to the condo.

That night I lay awake and replayed the stairwell.

The firm grip of his hands.

His pulse under his jaw.

I decided that the stairs had tired him out, and I did not believe a word of it.

On Thursday morning there was a meeting in the forty-floor conference room.

Lionel sat at the head of the table and told eleven executives that the board vote would move to the second Friday of next month, because Imogen's father was stuck in Zurich on business.

Nolan's face did not move.

Mine had been trained for a payroll desk, and it moved only a little.

Three more weeks.

I had to carry a baby and a lie through three more weeks.

When the meeting ended, the executives filed toward the elevators.

Eight of us squeezed into the last car.
