Chapter 7: In Front of the Board

"A figure of speech," Mrs. Lund said, and put her glasses back on. "I carry the whole Home in my head, sweetheart. Of course I do."

Nobody at the table believed it, but nobody said so.

I stood holding a tray of pastries I had forgotten to put down.

Mason's hand was still over mine on the clasp of my bag.

At the end of the table sat a board member in a gray suit, a retired banker with a red face and a gold watch.

He had been looking at our hands for a while.

"Mason," he said, with a smile that wanted something. "I'm sorry, but we're all curious. You chaired this board for a year and you never stayed past the agenda. Now you walk in here to stop the pastry girl from writing a check. What is she to you?"

"I'm only asking what the room is thinking," the banker added.

I wanted to put down the tray and go.

I couldn't make my feet move.

Mason took his hand off mine, slowly.

He turned to face the table and straightened his white cuff.

"She isn't the pastry girl," he said. "Her name is Jo."

"Of course."

"She has said no to four people in two days. It's been a good week for her, and I'd like it to continue." He looked at the banker with no expression at all. "And since you asked what she is to me, I'll be exact."

Mrs. Lund opened her mouth.

"I want her on the desk in my office, with her dress pushed up around her waist and my mouth between her legs, until she says my name loud enough that the lobby hears it." His voice was calm and level. "I'd like to do it tonight. If she'll let me. That's the whole answer."
